nerikiri

I consider myself quite a baker but for the first time in my life, I tried making Japanese traditional sweets! Of course as I was craving for japanese sweets all the time while I was in Canada, I often made things like dorayaki or oshiruko but I won't say they are authentic traditional sweets. Dorayaki is just a pancake with some baking soda added to flour, substituting sugar with honey and mirin. Oshiruko, you can just make it cooking red beans with sugar. I often got an inexpensive bag of red beans from Chinatown but they put too many! It always took me a week to finish a whole pot of oshiruko.

today I tried "nerikiri". Nerikiri is a type of sweet, made of sweet white beans paste mixing glutinous powder from some type of potatoes. We colored the white nerikiri with edible coloring powder and it was fun! we could choose bright x'mas colors but rather chose more autumn leaves like color this time. then covered red beans paste by the nerikiri we made and shaped them nicely as follows:D. it is enjoyable to get one thing done!
